PAIN MANAGEMENT AND BACK PAIN

We adopt an integrative, whole-body approach to pain management, treatment, and rehabilitation.  Treatments include  conservative modalities, interventional spinal procedures (injections and implant stimulators) as well as innovative minimally invasive surgical methods performed in outpatient setting.

Back pain is a debilitating condition that affects around 31 million Americans. Your backbone supports a wide range of movement and connects your brain to internal organs via the millions of nerve roots in your spine, so any injury or stress to your back can cause a wide range of health issues. Spine & Sports Medical Group and their team of physiatrists have helped countless patients in Campbell, California and San Jose, California, relieve their back pain and get back their mobility and freedom. If you suffer from back pain, start your treatment at Spine & Sports Medical Group by calling the office or using the online scheduling tool to book your appointment today.

Q & A BACK PAIN

What causes back pain?

Your back is made up of a network of bones, ligaments, joints, and muscles. Any injury or strain from overuse of any of these components can result in severe back pain.

Back pain isn’t a medical condition itself, but a symptom of other issues, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Osteoporosis
  • Strain from overuse
  • Injuries or accidents
  • Skeletal deformities

Back pain can result from diseases or develop over time as a result of poor lifestyle choices like smoking, constantly slouching, not exercising, and being overweight.

How do you diagnose conditions related to back pain?

Spine & Sports Medical Group uses a number of innovative diagnostic tests to identify the area of your back pain and determine the exact cause of it. Some of these include:

Discogram

A discogram is a diagnostic procedure during which your specialist injects a special dye in the injured area of your spine and uses an X-ray to examine the intervertebral spinal discs and determine the cause of your back pain.

Electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction study (NCS)

EMG and NCS tests measure electrical activity in your neurons and back muscles to assess dysfunction and damage that may cause your back pain.

Sacroiliac or piriformis injection

A steroid injection to your sacroiliac joint or your piriformis muscle can help reduce inflammation around nerves that pass through these parts of your lower back and confirm a suspected diagnosis of joint or muscle dysfunction.

Based on the results of your diagnostic tests, the team at Spine & Sports Medical Group can create a customized treatment plan for your specific condition.

How do you treat back pain?

After your diagnosis is confirmed, a team member at Spine & Sports Medical Group can suggest treatment options that include:

Injection therapy

The practice offers different types of injection therapies to reduce your back pain that include botox injections, epidural and facet joint injections, and trigger point injections to targeted areas like your sacroiliac joint or piriformis muscles.

Radiofrequency ablation or facet rhizotomy

This nonsurgical procedure uses radiofrequency waves to heat up and destroy nerves in your facet joints that may be the cause of chronic pain.

Nucleoplasty

Nucleoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that uses imaging technology to help remove a small amount of disc tissue and relieve pressure on your nerves.

Shockwave Orthotripsy®

Also known as Extracorporeal shock wave therapy, Orthotripsy® is a patented technology that delivers high-energy shockwaves to trigger your body’s natural healing process and increase blood vessel formation and the delivery of nutrients to the injured area.

Spinal cord stimulator device

A spinal cord stimulator device uses electrical impulses to disrupt pain signals to your brain and reduce your perception of existing back pain.
